Purpose

Teen pregnancy prevention is an element of ROMA National Goal 1: Low-Income People Become More Self-Sufficient as a result of evidence reflecting the consequences for teen mothers, as well as the children of teen mothers.

National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy 

The goal of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is to reduce the rate of teen pregnancy by one-third between 2006 and 2015.

    • Community-Based DOULA Project – A DOULA is a woman from the local community, recruited and trained to provide emotional and physical support to both the teen mother and baby during pregnancy, delivery, and the weeks after birth.  DONA International is a source of extensive resources related to doulas.

Virtual CAP Teen Pregnancy Prevention Postings 

For Males Only Program provides family life and abstinence education to young men ages 10-18 in order to assist in the mission to reduce teen pregnancy. 

Teen Parent Program provides support services for pregnant and parenting teens that want to increase their level of education, enrich their parenting skills, and improve the well-being of themselves and their children.

Outcomes

Teen pregnancy prevention is an element of ROMA National Goal 1: Low-Income People Become More Self-Sufficient as a result of evidence reflecting the consequences for:

  • Teen mothers
    • Much less likely to finish high school or to attend college
    • Have lower earnings once they finish school
    • Have increased risk of serious health problems
    • More likely to live in poverty and to rely on public assistance
  • Children of teenagers
    • Suffer from higher rates of low birth weight and related health problems
    • Have insufficient health care
    • Often receive inadequate parenting
    • Often fall victim to abuse and neglect
    • Often suffer from poor school performance
